Demonstrating a Volcano with the aid of Baking Soda and Vinegar
The foam and fizz that results from the baking soda and vinegar reaction can be used to demonstrate the eruption of a volcano.
You will need a model of a volcano made from plasticine or plaster of paris which has a well in the middle to hold a container in which the reagents can be placed.
* Place two tablespoons of baking soda in the container located in the volcano well.
* To a quarter cup of warm water add a few drops of a dark food coloring agent (to make the demo more realistic) and add that to the container holding the baking soda.
* Add half a cup of vinegar and watch the volcano erupt.
You will need lots of paper towels to clean up the mess once this demonstration is over.

Making a Bubble Bomb with Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar bombs..
Instead of launching a film canister, you can pop a plastic bag with the carbon dioxide gas produced from the baking soda and vinegar reaction.
All you need is a zip-lock sandwich bag and a paper towel: (Do this experiment outdoors or in the kitchen sink and always wear safety glasses!)
* Place one and a half tablespoons of baking soda in the center of a paper towel and fold up the towel into a square package to hold the powder inside.
* Into the zip-lock sandwich bag add half a cup of vinegar and a quarter cup of warm water.
* Put the paper towel package into the mouth of the zip-lock bag and hold it out of the vinegar by pinching the sides of the plastic bag.
* Zip the bag closed then let the paper towel drop into the vinegar.
The bag will fill up with carbon dioxide gas and pop with a bang, so make sure it's in a sink or outside.

A baking soda and vinegar bomb is a simple experiment that demonstrates a complex chemical reaction.
Baking soda and vinegar can be used to show how acids and bases interact. A baking soda bomb is a simple experiment that demonstrates a complex chemical reaction.
Baking Soda And Vinegar: The True Story
Vinegar is an acidic liquid whose key ingredient is acetic acid. On the pH scale (where seven is neutral) vinegar has a low pH, around 3. Baking soda, known chemically as sodium bicarbonate, is an alkaline or “base” substance. On the pH scale, baking soda measures about 8.
When an acid and a base are mixed, they neutralize each other. The neutralizing reaction of baking soda and vinegar releases carbon dioxide. The result is a fizzy, bubbly eruption.
Creating A Memorable Reaction
Making a baking soda and vinegar bomb is a simple process. You’ll need:
- 1 cup of vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- A small square of tissue paper
- A sandwich-size Ziploc bag
To demonstrate your fizzy bomb:
- Make sure you work outdoors or in a large sink with plenty of paper towel nearby.
- Pour the cup of vinegar into the plastic bag.
- Put the tablespoon of baking soda into the square of tissue paper.
- Twist the tissue paper into a little packet.
- Place the tissue paper packet into the bag and seal it tightly.
- Place the bag down quickly and watch the reaction!
- If the reaction is slow in starting, gently shake the bag.
The paper will dissolve, releasing the baking soda into the vinegar. The resulting reaction will generate carbon dioxide that will quickly fill the bag to bursting. For a more energetic reaction, use a 20-ounce plastic soda bottle. If you use a soda bottle, be prepared to clean up unless you’re in an open area.

Vinegar Grenade
You can probably find all of the materials for this simple project in your house. When you make one of these and throw it in the air, it will explode mid-flight. The principle of this project is the same as the dry ice bomb (squeezing too much gas into too small a container). Carbon dioxide gas forms as the result of a chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda. This project is safer than the dry ice bombs because the explosion is much weaker, but you should still be careful and avoid getting the chemicals near your face.
MATERIALS & INGREDIENTS
* A. Bottle of vinegar
* B. Film canister
* C. Plastic bottle cap
* D. Baking soda
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make sure that the bottle cap you have will slide into the film canister. It should slide down freely, but be large enough that it can not flip over sideways while inside the film can.
2. Fill the film canister about 1/4 full with vinegar.
3. Fill the bottle cap with baking soda. Keeping the open end of the cap facing upwards, insert it into the film canister and let it float on the vinegar. The purpose of the bottle cap is to keep the vinegar and baking soda seperate until you’re ready to throw the grenade.
4. Carefully close the film canister so the vinegar doesn’t splash around. (It may be easiest to set it on a flat surface.)
5. Give the grenade a solid toss. As the grenade tumbles, the vinegar will slosh around and mix with the baking soda, quickly creating enough carbon dioxide gas to pop open the film can.

Bubble Bomb Using Baking Soda and Vinegar
You can pop a plastic bag with the power of fizz
INGREDIENTS
* water
* measuring cup
* zipper-lock plastic sandwich bags
* paper towel
* tablespoon
* baking soda
* vinegar
INSTRUCTIONS
1 Figure out where you want to explode your Bubble Bomb. Sometimes the bags make a mess when they pop, so you may want to experiment outside. If it's a rainy day, you can explode your Bubble Bombs in the bathtub or sink.
2 It's very important to use a bag without holes. To test the zipper-lock bag, put about half a cup of water into it. Zip it closed and turn it upside down. If no water leaks out, you can use that bag. Unzip it and pour out the water. If the bag leaks, try another one. Keep testing bags until you find one that doesn't leak.
3 Tear a paper towel into a square that measures about 5 inches by 5 inches. Put 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in the center of the square, then fold the square with the baking soda inside. This is your "time-release packet."
4 Pour into your plastic bag:
1/2 cup of vinegar
1/4 cup of warm water
5 Now here's the tricky part. You need to drop the time-release packet into the vinegar and zip the bag closed before the fizzing gets out of control.
You can zip the bag halfway closed, then stuff the packet in and zip the bag closed the rest of the way in a hurry. Or you can put the time-release packet into the mouth of the bag and hold it up out of the vinegar by pinching the sides of the bag. Zip the bag closed and then let the packet drop into the vinegar.
One way or another, get the packet in the vinegar and zip the bag closed.
6 Shake the bag a little, put it in the sink or on the ground, and stand back! The bag will puff up dramatically and pop with a bang.
